[Class 18] Padded box lids are made by positioning padding between a selected part of the area of the lid top and a wrap sheet and then adhesively securing the sheet to the parts of the top not occupied by padding and the edges of the sheet to the side wall of the lid. The edges of the wrap sheet may be slit and the tab portions so formed secured to the side wall of the box, in overlapping relationship, and the edge of the sheet may be covered by a wrap strip secured around the side wall. The lid may be of any desired contour and, as shown, a heartshaped lid is formed from a top 103, Fig. 2, a side wall 102, Fig. 1, and a wrap sheet 101, Fig. 3, which is slit at the edges to form tabs 12 ; the lid may be formed in a machine such as described in Specification 419,741, a heartshaped form block 40, Fig. 7, being attached to the plunger 26 and co-operating with a recessed lower form block 50. The padding 106 is applied to the lid top 103 which is inserted in the side wall 102 and the assembly, with the wrap sheet 101 adhering thereto, is telescoped over the form block 40 which has a number of downwardly projecting spring fingers 164 secured to an overhanging plate 161 for retaining the assembly in position on the block. The form block 40, in descending, carries the assembly against the lower block 50 and the plate 161 presses the bottom edge of the assembly into the recessed portion 151 of the block 50 and the raised portion 154 thereof presses the wall 103 within the wall 102 and causes the sheet 101 to adhere to the inside face of the rim portion of the wall 102, to the edges of the wall 103, and to the padding 106. Further downward movement of the form blocks carries the assembly past brushes 172, 173, 174, Fig. 6, which wipe the tabs 12 against the wall 102, the brushes are shaped to the wall of the box and are preferably arranged in inclined positions so as to wipe the tabs of the sheet 101 progressively against the wall 102 and finally, clamping members also shaped to the wall of the box move inwards and press the tabs 12 into firm contact with the wall 102. |
