The bearing unit (1) has a housing portion (4) and a hollow shaft (5), which are arranged coaxially to a rotational axis (D) with two rolling bearings (6). The rolling bearings are arranged in a receiving space with two cover plates (15) for terminating the sides of the receiving space. A safety element (18) is provided for spacing the outer rings of the rolling bearings from each other. A center plane (E) is defined by the safety element, which is perpendicular to the rotational axis. The cover plates are formed as identical components and are arranged at the same distance to center plane.
