PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a pre-scuffing phenomenon in a large multi-cylinder two-cycle diesel engine. SOLUTION: A method is for detecting a pre-scuffing condition in a large multi-cylinder turbo-charge type two-cycle diesel engine. In the method, the temperature of a cylinder wall in an upper region of a cylinder is continuously or intermittently measured, and a determination whether the temperature of the cylinder fluctuates with the time is done. In the case wherein a peak interval or a dip interval of the temperature fluctuation of the cylinder to be measured exists in a range of nearly 6 minutes to nearly 18 minutes, and in the case wherein a temperature difference between the peak and the dip in the temperature fluctuation exists in a range of nearly 25 degrees to nearly 65 degrees, a pre-scuffing alarm is issued.
