[Class 53] A cell particularly for applying potential to the grid of a vacuum tube consists of two electrodes immersed in a glycol or glycerol, such as ethylene glycol or glycerine, or in a compound thereof such as the borate, to which is added a small amount of a weak organic acid such as lactic, malic or tartaric acid. The compound produced by heating boric acid with ethylene glycol or glycerine until dissolved may be used. One electrode may consist of aluminium, magnesium, beryllium, cadmium, zinc or an alloy or amalgam of one or more of these metals, or of chromium, silver or silver plated metals. The other electrode may consist of cuprous oxide, iron oxide, lead peroxide, vanadium pentoxide, cadmium oxide or of a sulphide or selenide of these metals, or of carbon or carbides such as those of nickel and iron. The Figure shows a number of cells in series having a tubular casing 1 of fibre or other material enclosing discs 2, 5 constituting the electrodes separated by plugs 4 of cotton, paper or cloth impregnated with one of the compounds enumerated above. The plugs 4 are enclosed in washers 3 of rubber, paraffined paper, &c. and lead discs 6 divide the tube into compartments and form the connections between the cells. Pressure is applied to all the cells by a spring 8 and the casing is closed by metal end caps 7. Different voltages may be taken from the device by means of tappings. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the liquid in which the electrodes are immersed may consist of a polyhydric alcohol, benzol, acetone, gum arabic in water, tri-acetin or other organic substance which has no action on the electrodes. Glycerol formate made by heating glycerine and ammonium formate may be used, or the viscous liquid obtained by heating triethanolamine with oleic acid and ethyl ether of ethylene glycol. In another example the liquid consists of sodium or potassium silicate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
