Disclosed are a backlight unit and a mobile terminal including the same. The backlight unit and the mobile terminal of the present invention include a panel part which includes at least one light transmissive layer and a backlight unit which is formed on one side of the panel part and transmits light to the panel part. The backlight unit includes at least one light emitting part which generates the light, a light guide plate which is located on one side of at least one light emitting unit and transmits the light to the panel part, and a light medium part which is located between the light emitting part and the light guide plate and has a refractive index which is practically equal to the refractive index of the light emitting unit or the light guide plate. The light from the light emitting part is efficiently transmitted by locating the light medium part between the light emitting part and the light guide plate, which has the same refractive index as the light emitting part and the light guide plate according to the present invention.
