The device has a light source (16) e.g. optical lens, provided with an illumination beam profile (24), and a detection beam profile (30) overlapping the illumination beam profile in a detection region. A section (33) of surface profile of flat products (14) is illuminated in the detection region, where the section is partially delimited by the illumination beam profile. An evaluation unit (20) e.g. computer, is fed with a detection signal generated by an optical sensor (18), where the evaluation unit determines the number of flat products located in the detection region. An independent claim is also included for a method for counting and detecting a flat product.
