The method involves adapting acoustic wave according to a rate of measurements of valid flight time related to speed of flow at a given instant, where the acoustic wave includes acoustic pulses that are emitted by bursts. The characteristics are calculated using a calculating unit (3) provided with an electronic apparatus and/or a computer. A rate of valid flight time measurements is calculated for one of the bursts as the ratio between a number of valid flight time measurements and a number of acoustic pulses of the burst. An independent claim is also included for a device for characterizing flow at a given instant.
