The method involves determining mass throughput of a compressor (6) from a characteristic function of supply and boost pressures and a rotation speed. Mass throughput of fresh air circulating in an intake circuit (3) upstream of a mixture zone (16), or mass throughput of recirculated gases circulating in a recirculation circuit (10) upstream of the mixture zone, is determined. A recirculation level of exhaust gases in output of the compressor is calculated from the mass throughput of the compressor, and the mass throughput of fresh air or the mass throughput of the recirculated gases. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine.
