The apparatus (100) has a UHF antenna for reading radio frequency identification (RFID) labels. The antenna is positioned in a distal portion in a housing extending along a plane (P) perpendicular to a plane of a screen (204) at an angle less than 5 degrees with a pointing direction (D) corresponding to a direction in which the apparatus is directed when the user holds a handle (202). The housing is delimited by a protective shell (208), where the dimension of the shell in a normal direction to the plane of the housing is less than 5 cm, preferably 3 cm, at a distal end (209a).
