An around view monitor (AVM) system displays vehicle periphery images in which a camera attached to the vehicle films through a monitor inside the vehicle in order for a driver to see. In an existing AVM system, the driving direction of the vehicle is not considered and images relative to front, rear, left, and right side are displayed as same specific gravity when a top view overlooking the vehicle is displayed so that images required to the driver cannot be delivered. Accordingly, the present invention relates to the around view monitor system and a monitoring method capable of providing user convenience and improving the safety by determining the driving direction using the gear information of a transmission and the steering information of a steering wheel, expanding the periphery images in a driving direction according to the driving direction, and displaying the images.
