PURPOSE: A maximum output power while driving a hybrid electric car battery prediction method and an apparatus are provided to measure the maximum output power precisely by using the battery voltage, current, and temperature information inputted while driving a car. CONSTITUTION: A short-time sliding mode observer(112) finds out a short-term status variable and a long-term sliding mode observer(114) finds out a long-term status variable. The short-time sliding mode observer is used in an inner loop of a battery controller(110) and the long-time sliding mode observer is used in an outer loop of the battery controller. A maximum output calculator(116) uses charging amount(Z) which is an output amount of the short-time sliding mode observer(112) and a variable of a resistor(R) which is an output of the long-time sliding mode observer to calculate a maximum output which is able to be used in the maximum output calculator.
