PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a non-toxic composition which binds acetaldehyde present in a stomach, intestine and/or colon, wherein the composition comprises one or more acetaldehyde-binding compound(s) including one or more free sulphhydryl and/or amino groups.SOLUTION: A non-toxic composition includes one or more acetaldehyde-binding compound(s) including one or more free sulphhydryl and/or amino groups. The compound(s) are mixed with a non-toxic carrier that effects sustained release of the compound(s) in a gastrointestinal tract. These compositions are of benefit in particular to patients having atrophic gastritis or achlorhydria or gastric achlorhydria.
