The method involves tuning a string (2) to a predetermined sound, and measuring an elongation change of the tuned string. Measurement values are evaluated over an electronic control circuit (14) such that the measurement values are provided to the control circuit. Control values are computed from the measurement values such that the control values reducing the elongation change are provided to a control device (4). The elongation change is detected by a membrane collar. The control device is acted on a spindle (50), which co-acts with cylinders firmly connected the membrane collar. An independent claim is also included for a stringed instrument.
