A control device for an engine provided with an exhaust recirculation mechanism is provided with: a condition determination unit for determining whether or not a fuel cut condition is fulfilled; a recirculation exhaust gas rate determination unit for determining whether or not the recirculation exhaust gas rate that is the ratio of a recirculation exhaust gas amount to an intake air amount is larger than a reference value; an additional load application unit for applying an additional load to the engine if the recirculation exhaust gas rate is larger than the reference value when the fuel cut condition is fulfilled; a torque control unit for outputting generated torque corresponding to the additional load and gradually decreasing output torque obtained by excepting the additional load from the generated torque after the fuel cut condition is fulfilled; and a fuel cut execution unit for stopping the supply of fuel and application of the additional load to the engine when the output torque decreases to a predetermined value.
