The invention relates to a control unit for a fully variable hydraulic valve control device for gas exchange valves on reciprocating internal combustion engines, having at least one cam, driven by the internal combustion engine and arranged on a camshaft, which is operatively connected to a hydraulic master unit for pressure generation, having at least one hydraulic slave unit, which is connected to at least one gas exchange valve, having at least one electrical hydraulic switch valve, controlled by the control unit, wherein the control unit carries out a selective actuation, allocated to the stroke movement of the gas exchange valves, of the switch valve(s) during operation after startup of the reciprocating internal combustion engine, and having at least one pressure chamber which is operatively connected to the master unit, the slave unit and the switch valve, wherein the control unit actuates the at least one switch valve such that, during the startup and/or starting phase of the reciprocating internal combustion engine, the at least one gas exchange valve opens and closes at fixed angle positions which lie within the maximum stroke of the gas exchange valve(s) on the basis of the full cam lift curve (4).
