PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a more compact projection optical system, and to provide an image display device including the more compact projection optical system.SOLUTION: A projection optical system comprising a plurality of optical elements each having refractive power, and projecting an image conjugate to an object onto a projected face, comprises a deflection element deflecting an optical path of a light beam, which is provided so that the light beam where the optical path is deflected passes between the plurality of optical elements, and does not have the refractive power. In the projection optical system, a normal line of the projected face in a center of the projected face does not pass through the plurality of optical elements or between the plurality of optical elements. An image display device comprises: an image generation device for generating an image; and an image projection display device for projecting and displaying the image generated by the image generation device onto a displayed face. In the image display device, the image projection display device comprises the projection optical system. |
