Provided is an edge light illumination device, in which a light modulation layer (34) comprises: a first region (34B) having optical anisotropy and a relatively high responsiveness to an electrical field; and a second region (34A) having optical anisotropy and a relatively low responsiveness to the electrical field. When denoting dispersal, the light modulation layer satisfies the formulae A>B>C and A1/C1<A2/C2, wherein: A is a first dispersal size with respect to light which propagates in a first direction which is perpendicular to a light entry face; B is a second dispersal size with respect to light which propagates in a second direction which is perpendicular to a first transparent substrate; C is a third dispersal size with respect to light which propagates in a third direction which is parallel to the light entry face, and which is parallel to a surface of the first transparent substrate; A1 is a first dispersal size in a third region (30a) among the light modulation layer which is toward the light source; C1 is the third dispersal size in the third region; A2 is the first dispersal size in a fourth region (30b) among the light modulation layer which is removed from the light source; and C2 is the third dispersal size in the fourth region. |
