<p>The purpose of the present invention is to provide a recording medium which can reduce the magnetic spacing between the medium and a magnetic head. The purpose is attained by a protective layer which has a reduced thickness and which exhibits thermal insulation properties. The recording medium is provided with a protective layer which comprises a silicon oxide layer formed on a magnetic recording layer, a silicon layer formed on the silicon oxide layer, and an amorphous carbon layer formed on the silicon layer. The thicknesses of the silicon oxide layer, the silicon layer and the amorphous carbon layer are 0.3nm or more, 0.2nm or more, and 0.2nm or more, respectively. The total thickness of the protective layer is 1 to 2nm, while the hydrogen content of the amorphous carbon layer is 25.6 to 43.3 at%.</p> |
