Convention date, Oct. 7, 1933. Addition to 432,566. [Class 94 (ii)] [See also Group VIII] In the manufacture of envelopes &c., the apparatus for cutting notches at variable distances from each other in a web, as set forth in the parent Specification, is modified in that the means for temporarily altering the speed of the notching cutters 33 comprises a driving train and a cam follower 41 and means for facilitating the interchangeable use in the train of any one of a series of cams 42 adapted for coaction with the follower, each cam being of appropriate contour for producing the temporary alteration of speed appropriate to a single selected speed of the web. The main shaft 13, through an adjustable gear train, drives the feed rolls 3, 4 to move the web 2 at a particular selected speed. The notching cutters 33, carried by a shaft 32, are driven by an unchanging gear train 18, 19, 21, 23, the latter of which drives a gear 27, with internal teeth, and coaxial with a gear 31 which, through pinions 28 on a rocker 30, drives the gear 31 fast on the shaft 32. Normally the pinions 28 have no planetary motion, but when the cam roller 41 in following the replaceable cam 42 rotates the shaft 38 of the rocker the pinions 28 are moved either to the right or left, in Fig. 5, to vary the speed of the shaft 32 and thence the notching cutters 33 to accord with the web speed selected, whilst the cutters are in contact with the web. The forward end of the shaft 22, which carries the replaceable cam 42, is situated to be readily accessible for the attachment and removal thereof. |
