A steel mill has a de-scaling assembly with de-scaling zones (4 - 6) with jets (7) spraying a liquid de-scaling agent (8) at high pressure onto an extruded metal bar (3). The jets are supplied through high-pressure pipes (9) from a low-pressure supply (12) and an electric (13) pump (11). The high-pressure pipe is also coupled to a high-pressure buffer reservoir (14). The electric motor (13) is linked via a rectifier (17) to a control unit (18) and mains power supply (16). The control unit and rectifier provide variable speed control for the electric motor.
