An absorbent cell comprises pellets A made from dry wood fibres encapsulated in a biodegradable material B. The wood fibres may have been dried, and may contain 3-5% moisture. The pellets may have an absorbing ratio of 250-350 grams per pellet per one litre of fluid absorbed by the pellet. The wood pellets may absorb no fluid until the cell wall is perforated. The cell may be manufactured to allow for perforating when required, or may be manufactured pre-perforated. The cell may contain room C to allow the wood pellets to expand after absorption of liquid. The absorbent cell may be manufactured from hessian, flax or cotton.
