An apparatus and method of determining whether a transmitter is power limited. A predetermined number is added to an amount of useful data for transmission expressed in bits, thereby to calculate the size of an increased amount of useful data. The predetermined number corresponds to the minimum number of bits required to transmit additional user data and any associated header. A transmission format which has the smallest transport block size with capacity for the increased amount of useful data is then selected from a predetermined group of transmission formats. Each of the group of transmission formats has a different transport block size. It is then determined whether the power required for the transmitter to transmit the selected transmission format exceeds the maximum power available to the transmitter. The apparatus and method can be applied to High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) systems. |
