[Class 82(i)] Apparatus for the production of magnesium by the reduction of a heated charge comprises one or more vertical or inclined metal retorts 3 projecting at both ends from the furnace 1. The upper end of each retort contains a removable condenser 5 with a fractionating part 7 for the condensation of sodium and like metals containing a series of discs 9 having staggered openings. Reduced pressure is applied through a pipe 10, and a cooling chamber 11 is provided. A heatradiation shield consisting of a number of discs 12 with staggered openings is placed between the condenser and the reduction zone of the retort. The lower end of the retort from which discharge of the residues is effected is closed by a flanged plate 13 and a spring-pressed plug 17.
