Filling materials or aggregates for use in the production of light weight building slabs are made by impregnating organic material such as woodwool, sawdust reeds, and straw with a mixture of waterglass, glycerine, and hydrochloric acid, preferably at a temperature of about 15 DEG C. In an example, the impregnating mixture comprises 1000 c.c. of a solution of waterglass of 4 DEG B., 50 c.c. of hydrochloric acid and 200 c.c. of glycerine. The treated material is mixed with a suitable binder such as cement to form slabs.
