The method (A) involves starting (H) an internal combustion engine (1) to purge a vapor tank (16) i.e. canister. A vapor load (C2) of fuel contained inside the tank to start the engine is calculated from another vapor load (C1) of fuel contained inside the vapor tank to stop the internal combustion engine and from a quantity (Q1) of fuel evaporated at an external temperature (Text) that is calculated during a lapse of time separating the stop from the starting of engine, where the former load is equal to a difference between the latter load and the quantity of fuel.
