The method involves detecting a duration from occurrence of a last purging that exceeds a threshold value of maximum time difference. The time difference is allowed to represent a canister (3) presenting its maximum saturation loading. A vapor saturation of the canister is detected according to a model of estimate of the load of the canister according to physical parameters. A pressure exceeding a predetermined pressure threshold is detected in a fuel tank (1). A temperature of the fuel tank exceeding a predetermined temperature threshold is detected. An independent claim is also included for a hybrid vehicle.
