The method involves providing power train braking via an electric motor, while the rotation of an internal combustion engine (10) is stopped. The electric motor is operated in a speed control mode in response to a request for providing the drive train braking using the engine. The combustion engine is accelerated to rotational speed of the electric machine, so that an open driveline clutch is closed when the engine speed is equal to the speed of the electrical machine.
