The sensor (10) has a light receiver (26) to convert light reflected from an object light (22) into a photocurrent. An evaluation unit (32) determines the properties of object from a reception signal derived from photocurrent. The evaluation unit detects the reflected light in an increased dynamic range of a sensitive receiving path (42a) or an insensitive receiving path (42b). A diode array (54) of insensitive receiving path is provided for determining a threshold for the intensity of reflected light, such that photocurrent is flowed only through insensitive receiving path. An independent claim is included for a method for detecting objects in monitored area.
