The device (10a) has a heating unit (12a) for heating a container (16a), which comprises a maximum wall thickness of 0.8 mm. A control unit (14a) controls and/or regulates the heating unit to execute a program. The control unit determines a volume characteristic of the container based on power consumption of the container. A sensor unit optically and capacitively determines the volume characteristics. The sensing unit is partial integartedly formed with touch- and/or a proximity sensor unit i.e. capacitive sensing unit, of a touch-sensitive control unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a cooking device.
