The apparatus (1) has a light source that is arranged for generating a specific light beam in parallel to specific axis direction. A position-sensitive sensor is provided for detecting a position of an incidence region parallel to the specific axis direction of light beam. A detour element is provided for deflecting a portion of specific light beam on specific axis direction, such that other light beam is generated on other axis direction. The sensor is provided for detecting a position of an incidence region parallel to other axis direction of other light beam. An independent claim is included for a method for operating coordinate measuring apparatus.
