The invention relates to a method for depicting data on the display (11) of a modular display unit (10), wherein the data to be depicted comprises safety-critical data portions and non-safety-critical data portions and the data is supplied to the display (11) via a graphical data stream (D) and depicted on the display (11). According to the invention, a safety component (20) of the display unit (10) generates the safety-critical data portions based on safety-critical signals which are supplied to the display unit (10), while a background component (30) of the display unit (10) generates the non-safety-critical data portions in the form of a background screen. The safety-critical data portions are put on the display (11) over said background screen in that a multiplexer (40) converts the graphical data stream (D) for display (11) between the safety component (20) and the background component (30), wherein, in specific regions, graphical content of the background screen changes and safety-critical graphical content is introduced and depicted on the display (11). The invention further relates to a related modular display unit (10) for carrying out said method.
