The interior of apparatus for reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen for instance for producing methanol is furnished with a coating of zinc or cadmium or their alloys produced by diffusion. The coating may be effected by subjecting the metal surface, such as iron or iron alloy to the action of zinc or cadmium vapour or may be dipped in or sprayed with the molten metal and then heated to above 500 DEG C. to effect the diffusion; or the apparatus may be embedded in zinc or cadmium powder, the latter preferably in admixture with inert material such as sand or alumina and heated to above 500 DEG C. Inert gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen or carbon dioxide may be present during the heating.ALSO:The interior of apparatus for reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen, for instance for the production of methanol, is coated with zinc or cadmium or their alloys produced by diffusion.
