The aerator has an elongated hollow section that defines a gas supply channel (10) and has a supporting wall (2) that is designed as supporting surface for a gas-permeable membrane (8). A through hole (11) for passage of gas from gas supply channel into an intermediate portion (12) formed between the supporting wall and the membrane is provided in the supporting wall. The through hole controls the gas flow, and is associated with a valve element (13) that comprises a rigid valve disc (14) whose underside rests upon the top face of the supporting wall.
