PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element having high contrast and using a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition having impact resistance.SOLUTION: There is provided a liquid crystal display element which comprises: a first alignment treatment substrate 51a having a first base material, a first electrode layer and a first alignment film; a second alignment treatment substrate 51b having a second base material, a second electrode layer and a second alignment film; and a liquid crystal layer which is formed between the alignment films and contains a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition, wherein the alignment films are a rubbing film, and the ferroelectric liquid crystal composition contains a predetermined chiral compound and has an INAC phase sequence. When observing a liquid crystal display element for measurement in which the second alignment film of the liquid crystal display element is not formed from the first alignment treatment substrate side, if a direction in which the extinction position in an SmCphase is tilted with respect to the extinction position in an SmA phase when no voltage is applied is defined as a reference direction, an alignment treatment direction d2 of the second alignment film is crossed with respect to an alignment treatment direction d1 of the first alignment film at an angle of 5° or more and 30° or less. |
