摘要 458,017. Making cardboard &c. boxes. CLAYTON, C. E. EVERY-, 51, Chancery Lane, London.-(Aktiebolaget Siefvert & Fornander; Kalmar, Sweden) May 22, 1936, No. 14564. [Class 18] An apparatus for subjecting the side walls of open cardboard, pasteboard, &c. boxes to pressure for fixing or improving the shape, comprises a table 11, Figs. 1 and 2 having three apertures 12 over each of which is placed a blank shaped e.g. as shown in Fig. 4, the portion 2 of which is two-ply. Plungers 14 carried on vertical slides 16 are actuated through a pin 17 and an arm 19 on shaft 18 oscillated by a roller 21 contacting a cam disc 22 on a cam shaft 23, to force the bottoms 1 of the blanks between plates 13 until they are flush with the top of table 12, so that flaps 2, 4 assume a vertical position. Guiderods 29, 30, carrying folding-fingers 31, 32, then move in opposite directions under the action of cams 24, 25 to bend flaps 4 at right angles to side-walls 2. Further movement of plungers 14 forces the blanks through openings 12 into cells 35 in a drum 34, endwalls 3 thus assuming a vertical position. After retraction of the plungers 14, drums 34 are rotated step-by-step counter-clockwise by gears 36, 37 and a six-armed Geneva crosswheel 39 fixed to pinion 37 and driven by a pin 40 through shaft 41, which is itself driven through gearing 42, 43 from main shaft 44. Successive cells are thus brought beneath the openings 12 so that further blanks may be inserted. When the box reaches, a folding plate 56, the leading flap 3a is bent parallel to the bottom, the rear flap being contacted from behind by a rotary folding member 59, mounted on a shaft 58 connected to shaft 51 by gears 60, 61 and 62, the latter being chain driven from sprocket 63. Member 59 bends the rear flap parallel to the bottom and holds it till it passes beneath plate 56. The movement to the right in Fig. 1 of arms 66 actuated by a roller 67 from a cam disc 23, causes pushers 64 to act on the bottoms and push the boxes out of the cells on to a holder 54 mounted on an endless chain 52, flaps 3a being thereby folded downwards on to lateral flaps 4. When holder 54 reaches the right-hand side of sprocket 51, Fig. 1, it begins a rectilinear path, and pressing plates 55 located between the holder press on the end-walls 3, the length of the rectilinear path being such that the glue between the box layers has time to coagulate. The pressing plates 55 may be resilient or exchangeable for plates of different lengths. After passing the upper chain-carrying sprockets (not shown), the holders 54 pass between rollers 70, Fig. 3, by which the two-ply walls 2 are pressed against the holders. When the'holders 54 again reach sprockets 51, plates 55 automatically disengage, and, at delivery position beneath shaft 50, a bar 73 is lowered and actuates nippers 72 which removes the boxes and allows them to drop on to slides 80. The finished boxes are fed along slides 80 by push members 81. In the form of chain shown in Fig. 8, the presser plates 55 are omitted, the endwise pressure being applied by the holders themselves. Lateral pressure is applied by bars 90 pivoted to levers 92 and secured to a cross-bar 93 raised and lowered by a cam 97. Raising of the bar 93 disengages bars 90 which are returned by a spring. In the form of chain shown in Fig. 8, the presser plates 55 are omitted, no pressure being applied directly by the holders. Lateral pressure is applied by spring bars 100 which are held out of action when the holder is on the lower sprocket 51 by the engagement of rollers 104 with discs 105 on the sprocket.
