<p>A video stream is encoded by receiving a video signal comprising a plurality of frames, each frame comprising one or more portion of video data, and receiving from a user a selection of a region in the video image derived from the signal, the region being represented by a portion of the video data. The portion of video data corresponding to the selected region is encoded at a higher quality than the other portions of the video data in the stream. The user may be the sender of the encoded video or its receiver. In the latter case, the sending terminal is notified of the selected region (14). The higher quality level may be achieved by increasing a quantization grain for quantization of a transformed portion of the data corresponding to the region. Alternatively, the non-selected regions of the image may be blurred. The selected region may comprise an object which may be tracked once selected. Also claimed is receiving a video signal and displaying a video image derived from it, wherein a user selection of a region in the image is transmitted to a source of the video data.</p> |
