A seating mat 1, or seating furniture with such a mat, comprises: an upper surface for supporting a user when seated; opposed front and rear edges; opposed side edges; a raised plateau 9 that extends at least part way across the mat 1 between the opposing side edges, closer to the rear edge than the front edge; and a raised ridge 8 that extends along the raised plateau 9. The raised plateau 9 raises the pelvis and spine of a user while the raised ridge 8 prompts the user to sit in the optimum location with the users' ischium towards the rear of the mat 1 behind the raised ridge 8. The mat 1 may also comprise an array of angled projections 2 which encourage a user to sit in the correct position and tend to grip a user's thighs to prevent slipping. Also disclosed is seating mat 1 which comprises an array of flexible papillae [see 2(a-d), Fig. 2] extending from an upper surface of the mat and positioned around a focus area [3, Fig. 2] on the surface. Each papilla has a tapered projection with a tip directed towards the focus area. The seating mat provides enhanced grip and posture correctional features.
