PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for vehicles, which accurately determines the forward movement or backward movement of a vehicle. SOLUTION: A control device for vehicles includes advancing direction determination means 22 for determining the forward movement or backward movement of a vehicle. When the advancing direction determination means 22 defines a code of the steering angle value (the output value of a steering angle sensor 92) when a steering is steered to the left and a code of the lateral acceleration value (the output value of a lateral acceleration sensor 93) which operates when the vehicle stably turns to the left as a first code (positive) and defines a code of the steering angle value when the steering is steered to the right and a code of the lateral acceleration value which operates when the vehicle stably turns to the right as a second code (negative), and when one value of the steering angle value and the lateral acceleration value is the first code and the other is the second code within a prescribed period after the steering is steered, the advancing direction determination means 22 determines that the vehicle moves backward.
