[Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] An envelope comprising hollow walls within which an inert atmosphere is maintained encloses at least a part of the water-tube space of a water-tube boiler. A boiler 1, superheater 2, economizer 3, and air heater, if provided, are enclosed together with the combustion chamber within a double-walled casing 4 constructed from spaced walls, hollow blocks, metal plates, &c. An inert atmosphere is maintained within the casing by means of a blower 6 which delivers part of the combustion gases into the casing preferably at a point adjacent the outlet from the boiler interior and at a pressure equal to or slightly above atmospheric. To recover heat radiated a controlled leakage of waste gas may occur through ports 7 in the inner wall of the casing preferably near the base of the combustion chamber. An additional casing may provide a jacket traversed by air for combustion in the furnaces.</p> |
