A mobile floor treatment machine comprises means permitting translational movement of the machine over a floor surface, a work head for treating the floor surface, a first reservoir for a cleaning liquid and means for introducing said cleaning liquid onto a floor surface via first discharging means, wherein said machine further comprises an ancillary liquid reservoir 24 in fluid communication with second discharging means 29 comprising a dispensing head which is disposed so as to eject liquid onto a floor surface in advance of a direction of machine travel, and a user-operable actuator 25 associated with the ancillary liquid reservoir 24 which permits selective application of liquid from the ancillary liquid reservoir 24 onto the floor surfaces, so that in use the work head passes over ancillary liquid pre-applied by the dispensing head so as to enhance the cleaning effect. The ancillary reservoir 24 may be a bottle. Thus the invention allows a machine to operate with a relatively low level of detergent (or no detergent) in the first cleaning reservoir, with concentrated detergent being selectively administered according to requirements via the ancillary reservoir 24.
