A platelet additive solution (PAS) comprising a viscosity increasing agent. The use of a PAS comprising such a viscosity increasing agent, especially at concentrations effective to achieve a viscosity similar to that of blood plasma, promotes platelet recovery during extraction from pooled buffy coats and provides for easier platelet production by maintaining the red cell/platelet-rich-supernatant interface.
