The present invention relates to a fuel cell system capable of being used for industry and leisure and a method for operating the same. Provided is a fuel cell system characterized by comprising: a hydrogen component extracting unit which extracts a hydrogen component from the provided fuel; an electric power generating unit which generates electric power using the hydrogen component; a power supplying unit which supplies power for operating the system by converting the electric power; and a battery charging unit which contains a battery and charges the battery using the electric power. According to the present invention, providing a supplementary power with the fuel cell enables the system to provide hybrid power and to be used as an independent power.
