PURPOSE: A lawn mower and a controlling method thereof are provided to control a cutting device safely and easily under an abnormal condition. CONSTITUTION: A lawn mower includes the following parts: a casing(110) which forms the exterior; a cutting device(120) which is movably installed at the casing and containing a grass-cutting blade; a moving device(130) which moves the casing; a sensing device(140) which senses movement of the cutting device with respect to the casing; a control part(180) which stops operations of the cutting device and the moving device when the sensing device senses movement of the cutting device with respect to the casing; and a rechargeable battery which supplies power for operating the cutting device, the moving device, the sensing device, and the control part.
