The invention relates to a motor vehicle onboard power supply system (100) having at least two subnetworks that can be connected to one another by means of a DC voltage transformer (16) and a bypass switch (6), wherein at least one load having at least two power requirements (P3, P3max) is connected in a second subnetwork, wherein the motor vehicle onboard power supply system is set up so that when there is a first power requirement (P3) for the at least one load (4) it supplies a voltage from a first subnetwork to the second subnetwork only via the DC voltage transformer (16) in a first mode of operation when the bypass switch (6) is open, and when there is a second, higher power requirement (P3max) for the at least one load (4) it supplies a power from a first subnetwork to the second subnetwork via the bypass switch (6) in a second mode of operation when the bypass switch (6) is closed.
