The device (10a) has a single-row cutting strand (12a) i.e. cutting chain, that comprises cutting strand segments (14a, 16a) i.e. cut-free cutting strand segments, where the cutting strand segments have a different number of cutting elements (18a, 20a) relative to each other. The cutting strand is integrated with support elements (26a, 28a, 30a). A strand segment (22a) has maximum volume of smaller than 15 cubic mm and maximum weight of less than 1 gm. A transverse fuse element is provided for transverse movement of the support elements. An independent claim is also included for a machine tool.
