The combustion engine has a sliding cam (3) that is arranged on a camshaft (1) in an axial position relative to an actuatable gas exchange valve. One portion of a slide element (10) is connected with a groove of a cam section (4) while other portion is provided for axial displacement of the sliding cam. A locking sleeve of the sliding cam is provided in a rest position of a contour portion (17). The sliding cam is axially displaced and engaged with a sliding sleeve (15).
