PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique which enables a large amount of catalyst to be loaded and enables the loaded catalyst to exhibit catalytic action effectively.SOLUTION: A honeycomb structure includes porous partition walls 5 with which a plurality of cells 4 are divided and formed, each of walls having a porosity of 45-70%. When a pore 10 having >10 μm maximum width of the partition wall 5 in the cross section parallel to the thickness direction Y is defined as a large pore 12 and the partition wall 5 is divided equally, along the thickness direction Y thereof, into three regions of a center region and surface layer regions present respectively on both sides of the center region, in the cross section of the partition wall 5 parallel to the thickness direction Y, the total of the cross-sectional areas of the large pores 12 which appear in the cross section of the surface layer regions is 60-100% of the total of the cross-sectional areas of all pores 10 which appear in the cross section of the surface layer regions and the total of the cross-sectional areas of the large pores 12 which appear in the cross section of the center region is 0-40% of the total of the cross-sectional areas of all pores 10 which appear in the cross section of the center region. |
