PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for a direct mode coding when coding a moving image.SOLUTION: A method for a direct mode coding comprises the steps of: obtaining, for a present block to be coded, respective predictions and costs for a plurality of direct modes comprising time axis direct modes on the basis of backward reference and the time axis direct modes on the basis of forward reference; and determining, as the optimum coding mode, one direct mode having the minimum cost, by comparing the obtained costs, and carrying out the coding of the determined direct mode.
