The system (100) has detecting modules (103a-103n) executed on network terminals (102, 104). The modules periodically locate wireless access points (106-112), and authorize the located wireless access points at a central entity (114). The entity is functionally in a position to receive information relative to the located wireless access points of the modules. The entity determines whether the determined located wireless access points are tested. The central entity conducts active testing of the located wireless access points when determined that the located wireless access points are tested. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program product comprising instructions for performing a method for identifying unauthorized and incorrectly configured wireless access points in a data transmission network (2) a method for identifying unauthorized and incorrectly configured wireless access points in a data transmission network.
