The machine has a printing unit (10) printing a web-like print material. A drying device (17) is downstream provided in a direction of transport of the printed print material. A pressure unit comprises printing elements (12, 13) with a mold cylinder (14) and a transfer cylinder (15). A guide roll (18) is arranged between an end print point (16) of the pressure unit and the drying device in transport direction of the print material for switching a print material web between the end print point of the pressure unit and the drying device. The guide roll is driven by a separate drive (19). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a rotary printing machine.
